European renewable energy trends: Solar declines, wind gains in late July

During the week of July 21, solar photovoltaic energy production declined across the main European electricity markets compared to the previous week. The largest drop was observed in the German market, where production fell by 21%. Portugal registered the smallest decrease, with a reduction of 2.0%. Other markets also experienced declines: Italy by 8.1%, Spain by 8.5%, and France by 8.6%. Both France and Italy saw a decrease in solar energy production for the second consecutive week.

Looking ahead to the week of July 28, forecasts from AleaSoft Energy Forecasting indicate that solar photovoltaic energy production will increase in the German and Spanish markets. In contrast, Italy is expected to continue its downward trend in solar production.

In the fourth week of July, wind energy production rose in most major European electricity markets compared to the previous week. The Iberian Peninsula continued its upward trend for the second week in a row. Spain experienced the highest increase, with wind production rising by 30%, while Portugal had the smallest increase at 8.3%. The Italian and German markets also recorded increases of 13% and 16%, respectively, reversing the declining trend from the previous week. France, however, was the only major market to see a decrease, with wind energy production falling by 1.8% after five straight weeks of growth.

Despite the overall decline in France, the country set a new daily wind energy production record for the month of July on July 21, reaching 245 GWh. Additionally, Spain produced 228 GWh of wind energy on July 24, a level not seen since mid-April.

For the week of July 28, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting projects that wind energy production will continue to rise in the Iberian Peninsula and Germany. Meanwhile, decreases are expected in both the French and Italian markets, AleaSoft reports.
