During the week of May 12, solar photovoltaic energy production increased across the main European electricity markets. France and Italy recorded the largest growth, with increases of 19 percent and 18 percent, respectively. The Iberian Peninsula experienced its second consecutive week of growth, with solar energy production rising by 9.2 percent in Spain and 13 percent in Portugal. Germany registered the smallest increase, at 7.1 percent, but continued its upward trend for the fourth consecutive week.
Several markets set new records for solar photovoltaic energy production during the week. On Tuesday, May 13, Germany reached its highest solar photovoltaic production for a day in May, producing 424 gigawatt-hours. This figure also marked the second highest daily value in its history. France recorded its second and third highest daily production values for the month of May, with 121 gigawatt-hours on May 14 and 16. On Thursday, May 15, Portugal set a new all-time record for daily solar energy production, generating 26 gigawatt-hours. Italy reached its highest daily production for May on Sunday, May 18, with 147 gigawatt-hours.
Looking ahead to the week of May 19, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting predicts that solar energy generation will increase in Spain but decline in Italy and Germany.
Wind energy production also rose during the third week of May in the German, Portuguese, and Italian markets compared to the previous week. Germany saw the largest increase, with a 43 percent rise, continuing its upward trend for the third week in a row. Italy experienced a modest increase of 3.3 percent, while Portugal’s wind production grew by 12 percent. In contrast, Spain and France experienced declines in wind energy output, falling by 29 percent and 45 percent, respectively.
