Croatia: Krk LNG terminal undergoes major upgrade to double capacity

After five years in operation, the Krk LNG terminal’s floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) has departed for the Kuzey Star shipyard in Turkey to be equipped with an additional regasification module. The upgrade will increase the terminal’s annual throughput from 2.9 billion cubic meters to 6.1 billion cubic meters, strengthening energy supply security for Croatia and markets across central and southeastern Europe.

The vessel will remain in the shipyard until October. In addition to installing the new module, work will include five-year class renewal procedures and routine maintenance, ensuring the unit returns fully certified and prepared for higher-capacity operations.

With its 125th cargo already received, the terminal is on track to enter the next gas year at the expanded capacity, offering greater flexibility and resilience to the regional gas network.

The total project cost is estimated at 46.1 million euros. The expansion will add a regasification module with a capacity of 250,000 cubic meters per hour, which will be integrated with the existing system on the FSRU. In April 2023, LNG Hrvatska signed a 22.97 million euro contract with Wartsila, a Norway-based specialist in cargo handling and reliquefaction systems, for the supply of the new module.

Once operational, the upgrade will more than double the terminal’s annual capacity. The Krk LNG terminal began operations in January 2021 and supplies natural gas to Croatia’s national transmission network, which is connected to EU neighbors Slovenia, Italy, and Hungary, as well as non-EU countries Serbia and Montenegro.
