The 1,000 MW unit 5 of Bulgaria’s sole nuclear power plant Kozloduy will be shut down for scheduled annual maintenance on 24 April. The maintenance works are expected to be completed by the end of May.
The works will include preventive technical maintenance and repairs of the equipment and systems, trials, specialized inspections and checks to secure the unit’s safe and reliable long-term operation. The reactor will also be refueled for the 29th fuel cycle.
Originally, NPP Kozloduy had six reactors, but four older 440 MW reactors were shut down in 2007 due to nuclear safety concern of the European Union. The plant currently operates two Soviet- built 1,000 MW reactors, unit 5 and unit 6 which were commissioned in 1987 and 1991 respectively.
