AES Bulgaria said that its coal-fired thermal power plant AES Galabovo generated 345,029 MWh of electricity this May, which is an all-time record production for the month of May since the plant’s commissioning in 2011.
AES Bulgaria said that TPP Galabovo uses only locally produced lignite from the Mini Maritsa East mining company and, in 2021, it bought almost 21 % of annual lignite production.
AES Bulgaria’s two units, TPP AES Galabovo and St. Nikola wind farm, together produced 11 % of all electricity consumed in Bulgaria in May. The wind farm alone produced almost 15,500 MWh last month, enough to meet the needs of some 45,000 Bulgarian households.
In 1999, US AES Corporation purchased the majority stake in Bulgaria’s Maritsa East 1 power plant, subsequently renamed AES Galabovo in 2009. AES completed the full acquisition of the thermal power plant from Ireland’s Consolidated Continental Commerce Limited in 2005.
