Bulgaria: Sunterra RE expands battery storage capacity at Kaloyanovo solar power plant

Supported byClarion Energy

Bulgarian renewable energy company Sunterra RE has expanded the capacity of its Kaloyanovo solar power plant near Plovdiv by installing an additional battery energy storage system (BESS). The new system provides 47 MW of installed power and 94 MWh of storage capacity.

The project is intended to enhance grid stability by storing surplus solar energy and releasing it during periods of high demand, improving both reliability and predictability of electricity supply. While the company did not disclose the cost of the investment, it confirmed that the installation includes 23 lithium iron phosphate battery units.

Sunterra RE emphasized that the Kaloyanovo site is central to its wider energy transition strategy, with the large-scale storage system allowing for more efficient energy flow management and contributing to cost-effectiveness in the power network.

Founded in 2023, Sunterra RE currently operates four solar power plants across Bulgaria. In addition to solar projects, the company is also developing wind energy and hydrogen-based solutions as part of its diversified renewable portfolio.
