Bulgaria sees significant increase in electricity production and renewable energy share in Q1 2025

According to data published by Bulgaria’s electricity transmission system operator, ESO, electricity production in Bulgaria between January 1 and March 30, 2025, increased by 16.83% compared to the same period in 2024, reaching a total of 11.74 TWh.

During this period, electricity consumption in Bulgaria also saw a rise of 7.77%, reaching 11.14 TWh. As a result, net electricity exports amounted to 0.6 TWh in 2025.

Baseload power plants, including coal and nuclear plants, generated a total of 9.62 TWh of electricity in 2025, marking an 18.4% increase from 2024.

The share of electricity produced from renewable energy sources (RES) in the transmission network grew by 24.39%, reaching 775.4 GWh. Meanwhile, the share of RES in the country’s distribution network also increased by 24.38%, totaling 786 GWh.
