Bulgaria sees 9.1% decline in electricity production in 2024, ESO reports

According to data released by the Bulgarian electricity transmission system operator ESO, electricity production in Bulgaria from 1 January to 4 August 2024 decreased by 9.1% compared to the same period in 2023, reaching a total of 22.2 TWh. During this period, electricity consumption in the country also declined by 1.9%, totaling 21.61 TWh.

As a result, Bulgaria’s net electricity exports amounted to 587.6 GWh in 2024. Baseload power plants, including coal and nuclear facilities, generated 15.91 TWh of electricity, a significant 17.8% drop from 2023 levels.

Conversely, electricity production from renewable energy sources (RES) showed substantial growth. The share of RES in the transmission network increased by 42.71%, reaching 2,028.6 GWh, while the share of RES in the distribution network rose by 36.43%, totaling 1,992.8 GWh.
