Bulgaria: Growth in electricity production and exports in first half of 2025

According to data from the Bulgarian electricity transmission system operator ESO, electricity production in Bulgaria between 1 January and 15 June 2025 increased by 13.42 percent compared to the same period in 2024, reaching 20.63 terawatt-hours (TWh). Electricity consumption in the country also rose during this period, recording a 6.82 percent increase to a total of 19.38 TWh.

As a result, Bulgaria recorded net electricity exports of 1.25 TWh in 2025. Baseload power plants, which include coal and nuclear facilities, generated 15.37 TWh of electricity, marking a 17.1 percent increase compared to 2024.

The amount of electricity generated from renewable energy sources (RES) and fed into the transmission network rose by 17.94 percent to 1,844.3 gigawatt-hours (GWh). Additionally, the RES output in the distribution network increased by 24.68 percent, reaching 1,948.9 GWh.
