Electricity production in Bulgaria in 2023 has decreased by 20.8% compared to 2022, to 39.95 TWh, according to the data published by electricity transmission system operator ESO.
In the same period, electricity consumption decreased by 4.2%, to 36.59 TWh.
Surplus electricity amounted to 3.37 TWh in 2023, 72.5% less than in 2022. Baseload power plants (coal, nuclear) produced 31.86 TWh of electricity in 2023, which is 25.7% less than in 2022.
The share of electricity produced from renewable energy sources in the transmission network rose by 59.5% to 2,516 GWh, while RES share in the distribution network increased by 13.7% to 2,486 GWh.
