In the period between 1 January and 31 December 2020 production of electricity in Bulgaria has decreased by 7.67 % compared to the same period in 2019 and reached 40.74 TWh, according to the data published by Bulgarian electricity transmission system operator ESO. Bulgaria’s electricity consumption dropped as well in the same period, by 2.56 % reaching a total of 37.3 TWh. Surplus electricity amounted to 3.44 TWh in 2020, which is 41.17 % less than in 2019. Baseload power plants (coal, nuclear) produced a total of 34.11 TWh of electricity in 2020, which is 9.63 % less than in 2019. The share of electricity produced from renewable energy sources (RES) in the transmission network rose by 10.38 % to 1,326.2 GWh, while RES share in the country’s distribution network increased by 5 % to 1,916.8 GWh.
