AES Bulgaria has reported that its coal-fired thermal power plant, AES Galabovo, generated 1.93 million MWh of electricity in 2024, marking a 6.4% increase compared to the previous year. This output accounted for approximately 5% of Bulgaria’s total electricity consumption for the year. In December alone, AES Galabovo contributed 342,160 MWh, meeting 9% of the country’s electricity needs during the month.

The plant, originally known as Maritsa East 1, was acquired by the US-based AES Corporation in 1999. It was rebranded as AES Galabovo in 2009. AES completed its full acquisition of the plant from Ireland’s Consolidated Continental Commerce Limited in 2005.
