AES Bulgaria, a unit of the US Energy Corporation AES, said on Wednesday that its AES Galabovo thermal power plant and St. Nicholas wind farm together produced 1,174,500 MWh of electricity in the first quarter of 2022, an increase of over 20% year-on-year.
The coal-fired power plant AES Galabovo produced 1.031 million MWh of electricity in the first quarter, while the Sveti Nikola wind farm produced almost 143,500 MWh, AES Bulgaria said in a statement.
In March alone, the thermal power plant produced 368,160 MWh, covering 10% of Bulgaria’s electricity consumption last month, the statement said.
The wind farm produced 52.9 GWh of electricity in March, an increase of 33% on an annual basis.
In 1999, the AES Corporation unit acquired a majority stake in the Bulgarian TPP Marica East 1 project, which was renamed AES Galabovo in 2009.
In 2005, AES took over a large ownership of the thermal power plant from the Irish company Consolidated Continental Commerce Limited (3C).
