Bosnia and Herzegovina: Increase in electricity production, imports and lignite output in July

According to the Agency for Statistics of Bosnia and Herzegovina, gross electricity production in the country reached 1,283 GWh in July 2024, up from 1,275 GWh during the same month last year. Hydropower plants contributed 30.1%, thermal power plants 65.9%, and solar and wind power plants accounted for 4% of the total production.

Net hydropower generation was recorded at 385 GWh, reflecting a 12.5% decrease compared to July 2023. Conversely, thermal power production rose by 7.2% to 759 GWh, while electricity generated from renewable sources (wind and solar) totaled 51 GWh.

Electricity imports surged by 38.2% to 420 GWh in July 2024, compared to 304 GWh in July 2023. Exports also increased, rising by 14.6% to 660 GWh from last year’s 576 GWh.

Lignite production in Bosnia and Herzegovina reached 409,000 tons in July 2024, a slight increase of 0.3% from the previous year. However, brown coal production declined significantly, falling by 20.9% to 468,000 tons. Additionally, natural gas imports increased by 8.6%, totaling 9.83 million cubic meters, compared to 9.05 million cubic meters in July 2023.
