Albania: New electricity distribution network to boost access in the Albanian Alps

A new electricity distribution network will be built in the Albanian Alps through a €2.3 million contract signed between the Albanian Development Fund and the consortium of Enbi Power and Aci Engineering. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), which managed the tender process, announced the contract signing.

This investment is part of Albania’s €106 million Infrastructure and Tourism Project, aimed at improving key infrastructure in tourism-prone regions. The project is financed by the European Union through technical assistance and investment grants totaling €46 million, along with an additional €60 million sovereign loan provided by the EBRD.

The tender for the electricity network was launched in the EBRD’s procurement system last year, with companies given until October 29, 2024, to submit bids. Investments in Albania’s electricity infrastructure, particularly in high-tourism areas, have gained momentum due to increased demand on the power grid. While most projects have focused on coastal areas, the growing tourism potential in the country’s northern regions has highlighted the need for infrastructure upgrades there as well.

Beyond the electricity network, the Infrastructure and Tourism Project also includes road and sewerage improvements, with the EBRD previously launching several tenders to support these initiatives.
