Albania: Electricity production drops in Q1 2025 amid rising imports and lower exports

According to the Albanian Institute of Statistics (INSTAT), Albania produced 2,234 GWh of electricity in the first quarter of 2025, which is 9.8% less than the 2,478 GWh produced during the same period in 2024.

Electricity exports totaled 738 GWh, down 10.1% year-on-year, while imports rose significantly by 43.4%, reaching 767 GWh. Hydropower remained the dominant source of electricity, generating 92.1% of the total. Of this, 45.8% came from state-owned plants and 46.3% from privately owned facilities.

Electricity consumption in the country dropped to 1,716 GWh, a 4.2% decline compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, losses in the power grid slightly increased to 483 GWh, up from 478 GWh in the first quarter of 2024.
