French company Voltalia has completed the construction of a 140 MW solar power plant Karavasta in Fier. The commissioning of a solar power plant, which is the largest in the Western Balkans, is expected in the next few weeks.
The solar power plant Karavasta covers an area of about 200 hectares and is expected to have an output that will be enough to cover the annual consumption of 220,000 citizens. Green electricity generation will help offset more than 29,160 tons of CO2 emissions annually.
In 2020, the government signed a contract for the construction, operation and maintenance of 140 MW solar power plant in Karavasta with Voltalia, the winner of a tender launched in January that same year. The company is obliged to sell half the electricity produced at the solar power plant to Albanian electricity distribution company OSHEE at the price of 24.89 euros/MWh for a period of 15 years, less than half the price ceiling of 55 euros, while the remaining half will be sold on the market.
The concession agreement is valid for 30 years. In 2021, Voltalia also won the concession for the construction of a 100 MW solar power plant near Durres.
