Serbia secures temporary gas supply extension through peak winter, ensuring energy stability for households and industry

Serbia has secured continuity of natural gas deliveries through the peak winter period after reaching a temporary supply arrangement valid until the end of March. President Aleksandar Vučić emphasized that the extension provides stability for households and industry, ensuring sufficient gas and electricity during the coldest months.

The three-month extension is intended to give the country breathing space while longer-term energy and ownership issues are addressed. According to the President, the agreement allows citizens to complete the winter without concern over shortages or disruptions.

He also commented on the unresolved future of NIS, noting that no immediate action would be taken before mid-January. He stressed that the state does not plan to confiscate assets, but could pursue a purchase if necessary, once the Russian side completes its obligations. Serbia is prepared to proceed with a transaction even at a premium if circumstances require.

President Vučić highlighted that Serbian authorities are closely monitoring regional developments, including discussions involving Gazprom and Hungary’s MOL, which form part of a broader reshaping of gas flows in Central and Southeastern Europe.

On fuel supply under sanctions pressure, he noted that Serbia has maintained diesel imports despite restrictions. The country consumes around 6,000 tons of diesel per day and has successfully covered this demand for more than two months without interruption.

Overall, the government views the gas extension, combined with continued fuel logistics management, as a critical buffer while navigating a complex period marked by sanctions, regional negotiations, and strategic decisions regarding key energy assets.
