Hungary: MOL resumes fuel production at Százhalombatta refinery following fire incident

Fuel production has resumed at MOL’s Százhalombatta refinery, operating at reduced capacity as the company gradually brings back online units unaffected by the recent fire. MOL confirmed that the restart process is on schedule and that Hungary’s domestic fuel supply remains stable and fully secured.

The fire broke out on 20 October at the AV3 distillation unit and was quickly contained, with firefighters completely extinguishing it the next day. No injuries were reported.

An investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the incident. Meanwhile, engineering teams specializing in structural, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and chemical systems are inspecting the affected installations. Their assessment will establish which components can be repaired, which must be dismantled, and which need to be rebuilt. A detailed dismantling and restoration plan will be prepared once the evaluations are complete.

According to MOL’s latest update, production has resumed across most refinery units except the damaged AV3 plant. The company had earlier assured that short-term fuel supply in Hungary would not be affected. However, the fire could temporarily impact regional fuel distribution, particularly to Serbia, where MOL expanded export deliveries earlier this year.
