Bulgaria boosts power production and exports as renewable output surges in 2025

According to data from Bulgarian electricity transmission system operator ESO, the country produced 27.3 TWh of electricity between 1 January and 31 August 2025, marking an 8.67% increase compared to the same period in 2024.

Electricity consumption also grew, rising by 5.58% to 25.47 TWh. As a result, Bulgaria recorded net electricity exports of 1.84 TWh during the period.

Baseload power plants, including coal and nuclear facilities, generated 19.5 TWh in 2025, up 8.2% year-on-year.

Renewable energy output also saw significant growth. In the transmission network, RES generation rose by 20.42% to 2,819.6 GWh, while in the distribution network it increased by 24.93% to 2,858.5 GWh.
