ICGB, the independent operator of the Greece-Bulgaria gas interconnection (IGB pipeline), has obtained a construction permit for the first phase of its capacity expansion project. This phase involves upgrading the Stara Zagora metering station in Bulgaria, increasing its throughput capacity from 3 to 5 billion cubic meters per year.

With the permit secured, ICGB can proceed with contractor selection. The upgrade includes the installation of additional filtration units, gas pre-heating equipment, and new pressure reduction and metering lines to handle higher gas flows while ensuring compliance with all safety and operational standards.

Simultaneously, ICGB is advancing funding negotiations with financial institutions. A new two-year market test has commenced to assess demand for the increased capacity, with non-binding expressions of interest expected by September 2025 and binding commitments targeted for summer 2026.

Documentation for the second expansion phase at the Komotini metering station in Greece is progressing alongside to align with the overall project timeline.

The IGB upgrade supports the Vertical Corridor initiative by expanding access to diversified gas sources, including LNG from Greek terminals and gas from Azerbaijan. Since starting operations in the fourth quarter of 2022, the interconnector has become a reliable supply route for southeastern Europe. Enhancing capacity will reinforce its strategic importance for Bulgaria and neighboring markets, such as Ukraine, via connections with the Trans-Balkan and Trans-Adriatic pipelines.
