US-based nuclear energy company Westinghouse, in collaboration with South Korea’s Hyundai Engineering & Construction, will conduct a technical feasibility study for the planned second unit at Slovenia’s Krško nuclear power plant. The study will explore the potential installation of an AP1000 nuclear reactor for the plant’s operator, state-owned GEN Energija.

Dan Lipman, President of Westinghouse Energy Systems, highlighted that Westinghouse has had a long-standing partnership with GEN Energija since the Krško nuclear power plant’s first unit began operations in 1983. Westinghouse has supported the plant with operational assistance and fuel supply and is now prepared to deepen this relationship by evaluating the feasibility of the Krško 2 project in greater detail.

Westinghouse is currently involved in the development and supply of nuclear power plants in several European countries, including Poland, Ukraine, and Bulgaria.

Globally, six AP1000 reactors are already operational, with 12 more under construction and five others under contract. By the end of this decade, a total of 18 AP1000 units are expected to be fully operational worldwide.
