Bulgaria: Electricity production and consumption surge in January 2025

Bulgaria’s electricity production between 1 and 19 January 2025 rose by 15.19% compared to the same period in 2024, reaching 2.57 TWh, according to data from the country’s electricity transmission system operator, ESO.

Electricity consumption also saw an increase, rising by 17.58% to a total of 2.55 TWh. As a result, net electricity exports for the period stood at 0.02 TWh.

Baseload power plants, including coal and nuclear, generated a combined total of 2.19 TWh of electricity in 2024, marking a 17.6% increase over the previous year. Additionally, the share of electricity produced from renewable energy sources (RES) saw notable growth. RES output in the transmission network rose by 5.96%, reaching 125.8 GWh, while in the distribution network, RES production grew by 16.23% to 138.1 GWh.
