According to data from Bulgaria’s electricity transmission system operator ESO, the country’s electricity production between January 1 and December 15, 2024, decreased by 5.21% compared to the same period in 2023, totaling 36.06 TWh. Meanwhile, electricity consumption in Bulgaria increased by 0.62%, reaching 34.96 TWh. As a result, Bulgaria’s net electricity exports amounted to 1.1 TWh, a 66.6% drop compared to 2023.
Electricity production from baseload power plants (coal and nuclear) totaled 26.83 TWh in 2024, which is 11.3% lower than the previous year. However, the share of electricity produced from renewable energy sources (RES) saw significant growth. The RES share in the transmission network rose by 33.39%, reaching 3,218.8 GWh, while in the distribution network, the RES share increased by 33.69%, totaling 3,182.1 GWh.
