Bosnia’s state-owned power utility, EPBiH, has signed a €64.6 million contract with a consortium led by China’s Dongfang Electric International Corporation to install a flue gas desulfurization (FGD) facility at its coal-fired thermal power plant, TPP Kakanj. The consortium also includes the Chinese State Power Investment Group Yuanda Environmental Protection Engineering Co, as well as local companies ITC, Saraj Inzenjering, Winner, and Firing.
The contract covers the construction of a shared desulfurization system for units six and seven of the power plant, with an expected completion time of 36 months. This project is in line with Energy Community directives that require the desulfurization and denitrification of thermal power plants by 2027. The new FGD system will ensure that TPP Kakanj meets the required sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission limits, allowing the plant to continue operating beyond January 1, 2028.
EPBiH launched a tender for the desulfurization facility in March 2023. Currently, three of the plant’s seven units are operational, with a combined capacity of 450 MW.
