According to the National Institute for Statistics (INS), Romania’s electricity consumption in the first nine months of 2024 totaled 37.44 TWh, representing a 1.2% increase compared to the same period in 2023.
- Industrial consumption: 28.42 TWh, up by 0.7% year-on-year.
- Household consumption: 8.72 TWh, a 3.2% increase.
- Public lighting: 302.9 GWh, showing a 1% decrease.
In terms of electricity production, Romania generated 39.63 TWh in the first nine months of 2024, marking an 8.6% decline from the previous year. Breakdown of production sources:
- Thermal power plants: 12.64 TWh, a 0.3% decrease.
- Hydropower plants: 11.46 TWh, a 23.6% drop.
- Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant: 7.97 TWh, down 3.8%.
- Wind power: 4.63 TWh, a 16.9% decrease.
- Solar power: 2.93 TWh, a 58.6% increase.
Regarding electricity trade, Romania’s exports in January-September 2024 amounted to 8.16 TWh, a 5.2% decline from 2023, while imports surged by 61.1%, reaching 9.52 TWh.
On the primary energy resources front, Romania’s total production for the first nine months of 2024 was 12,666.5 thousand tons of oil equivalent (Mtoe), a 5.4% decrease compared to 2023. Breakdown of primary energy production:
- Coal: 1,417 Mtoe, a 18.2% decline.
- Oil: 2,024.1 Mtoe, down 3.8%.
- Natural gas: 5,635.5 Mtoe, a 0.8% increase.
