North Macedonia’s state-owned power utility, ESM, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) to ensure reliable natural gas supplies for the country.

The collaboration aims to improve access to natural gas, diversify supply options, and provide a stable, continuous supply at competitive prices, in line with legal requirements. This MoU supports North Macedonia’s efforts to strengthen its energy security, while SOCAR seeks to expand its footprint in the regional market.

In addition, North Macedonia is advancing its energy infrastructure. In 2021, the country signed an agreement with Greece to establish a natural gas interconnection with an initial capacity of 1.5 billion cubic meters per year, connecting to the Southern Gas Corridor. North Macedonia is also planning to build a gas interconnection with Serbia to further enhance its energy supply options.
