Europe: Solar and wind energy production in the first week of October

In the week of September 30, solar photovoltaic energy production saw a decrease across most major European electricity markets compared to the previous week. The German market experienced the largest drop, with a decline of 21%. Italy and Portugal followed with decreases of 18% and 15%, respectively. This marked the fourth consecutive week of falling production in Portugal and the second week of decline in Germany. In contrast, both the French and Spanish markets reported increases in solar production, with rises of 8.3% and 5.6%, respectively, reversing the downward trend observed earlier.

During this week, the Iberian Peninsula and French markets achieved historical daily records for October solar photovoltaic production. Despite the overall decline in Portugal, the market recorded its highest production for October on Tuesday, October 1, reaching 15 GWh. Spain generated 136 GWh on Friday, October 4, while France set its record a day later, on Saturday, October 5, with 98 GWh from solar energy.

Looking ahead to the week of October 7, forecasts from AleaSoft Energy Forecasting suggest that solar production will increase in Germany, while it will decline in Spain and Italy. The first week of October also saw a general decrease in wind energy production across major European markets, reversing the trend from the previous week. The largest drop was in Germany at 28%, followed by Italy and France, which both saw declines of 18%. Wind energy production in Spain and Portugal fell by 14% and 10%, respectively.

Forecasts for the second week of October predict a recovery in wind energy production in the Iberian Peninsula, Germany, and Italy, while a decline is expected in the French market, AleaSoft reports.
