Hungary: Stable natural gas supply

According to a report from the Hungarian Energy and Public Utility Regulatory Authority (MEKH), Hungary’s natural gas supply has remained stable, benefiting from the interconnector capacity developments made in previous years. This has allowed for increased gas flows from southern interconnectors, including Romania, Croatia, and Serbia.

The report highlights that 2023 was notably calmer than previous years, with price spikes diminishing and prices beginning to stabilize. By November 6, storage facilities were fully stocked, and due to mild weather conditions, gas withdrawals only commenced at the start of the month.

Residential gas consumption fell below 3 billion cubic meters in 2023, representing a 14.5% decrease from 3.5 billion cubic meters the previous year and nearly a 27% drop compared to 2021. Overall national consumption also declined by over 11%, dropping from 9.4 billion cubic meters in 2022 to 8.3 billion cubic meters in 2023.
