Romanian electricity producer Nuclearelectrica announced that Unit 1 of its Cernavoda nuclear power plant was successfully synchronized to the national electricity system on the morning of August 29, 2024. The unit had been automatically disconnected from the network on August 26 due to a malfunction in the classical part of the plant, specifically the protection system of a power discharge transformer. The incident did not affect nuclear safety.

The Cernavoda NPP, which contributes approximately 18% of Romania’s national electricity consumption, operates two reactors, each with an installed capacity of 700 MW.
