Electricity consumption in Greece dropped by 14 % in April 2020, compared to the same month last year, due to the coronavirus pandemic which forced many businesses to temporarily seize operation, according to data published by electricity transmission system operator ADMIE.
The demand drop in the high-voltage category for industrial consumers was 23 %, nearly double the overall decline. Major manufacturers chose to halt their operations to limit losses prompted by lower market demand. April’s 14 % drop in consumption is the biggest on record.
In March, electricity consumption was 1.8 % lower compared to the same month a year earlier.
Electricity consumption is expected to remain at low levels in the coming months as companies will need some time before returning to normal operation.
