Slovenia supports efforts to strengthen EU energy resources diversification, Zdravko Pocivalsek, Slovenian Minister of Economic Development and Technology said. He also said that Slovenia sees Southern Gas Corridor as part of strengthening EU’s supply security.

In this respect, we see the Southern Gas Corridor as part of strengthening EU’s security of supply as gas will continue to be an important source of energy on the path to decarbonization and as a great opportunity to increase energy cooperation between the EU and Azerbaijan.

The so-called Southern Gas Corridor (SGC) is a system of pipelines, of which some are already built while the other are still in plan, which will connect the Caspian Sea region and the European Union bypassing Russia. The system includes the South Caucasus pipeline, Trans-Anatolian pipeline (TANAP) and Trans-Adriatic pipeline (TAP). The Corridor crosses the territories of Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey, Greece and Albania. Natural gas from Shah Deniz field will be exported to Turkey and European markets by expanding the South Caucasus pipeline and connecting it with the Trans-Anatolian (TANAP) and Trans-Adriatic (TAP) pipelines which are currently under construction. According to initial estimates, first shipments of gas to Turkey will be delivered in 2018, and a year later for Europe. Southern Gas Corridor appeared as the substitute for the Nabucco project, which was popular in the last decade, but had to be cancelled due to the lack of investments. In May 2018, the Southern Gas Corridor was officially inaugurated in a ceremony held at the Sangachal Terminal in Baku.
