At the UNESCO General Conference in Paris on Nov. 7, Serbia was elected to the World Heritage Committee
Aside from Serbia, which won 86 votes, Germany, India, Japan, Algeria, Senegal and Malaysia were elected in the first round.
The UNESCO World Heritage Committee has 21 members and is the most important body overseeing the implementation of the World Heritage Convention. The committee meets once a year, when it decides on adding new sites to the World Heritage List.
Serbian Culture Minister Predrag Markovic said the election to this body gives Serbia the opportunity to fight more efficiently for the safeguard of its patrimony in Kosovo and Metohija.
Markovic told Beta that being elected to the Committe was a major recognition to the country’s experts who take care of the world cultural heritage in Serbia.
